The Hidden Dangers in Cannabis Consumption: Know What You’re Inhaling

In a recent study conducted by Columbia University, alarming findings have come to light regarding the consumption of cannabis. While marijuana users are no strangers to toxicology screens, the study reveals an unsettling trend — abnormally high levels of Lead and Cadmium appearing in the blood and urine tests of regular cannabis consumers.

This research underscores one unequivocal conclusion — where you obtain your marijuana matters. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries in the United States are mandated to rigorously test their cannabis products, rejecting those with toxic contaminants. If you source your cannabis from one of these dispensaries, you can breathe a little easier. However, if you’re not, please read on.

Gone are the days when your local dealer supplied you with cannabis from their basement grow. The black market for cultivation has evolved into a global business, where international cultivators, notably in Mexico and China, resort to using chemicals to stress the plant. This stress can boost bud weight and THC levels, making the cannabis more marketable and lucrative. Unfortunately, these chemicals linger in the plant. Cannabis, along with the entire hemp family, falls into the accumulator category of vegetation, known for absorbing toxins. Did your cannabis supplier test the soil? Did they use chemicals to stress the plant? Are those chemicals still present? If you didn’t purchase your cannabis from a licensed dispensary, required to test cannabis before sale, you may never know.

In the past, we witnessed similar findings in the mid-70s regarding cigarettes, not tobacco in general. This prompted a significant shift in the tobacco industry, with cigarette companies passing their addiction-inducing chemical practices off as necessary for a more “convenient” and “pleasurable” smoking experience. Today, we see parallels as Big Cannabis introduces “convenient” ways to consume their products. The use of solvents to extract cannabis oil, creating products that are chemically laden, is becoming more prevalent. We’re once again making compromises for convenience, just as we did with cigarettes. The key question left unanswered is why these toxins are surfacing now. Changes in cultivation methods and the use of solvents in oil extraction are among the factors.

So, as you navigate the evolving cannabis landscape, be cautious, well-informed, and critical of the products you choose. Consider the source, the extraction methods, and the materials used in your cannabis experience. Safety should always come first, even as the industry grows and changes. Remember, knowledge is power, and it’s essential to stay vigilant as you enjoy your cannabis journey.
